Plastic Smart Cities is an international initiative led by WWF – World Wide Fund For Nature that helps cities, coastal areas, and tourism hubs reduce plastic waste by building circular waste systems. The program supports co-creation of solutions to prevent plastic leakage into nature through a mix of behavioural change, policy enabling frameworks, and practical implementation in collection, recovery and recycling. Since its launch in 2018, PSC has piloted solutions, developed knowledge resources, and connected cities with partners to accelerate action. It emphasizes an inclusive approach that engages residents, governments, businesses, and other stakeholders to design and implement local interventions. PSC operates across regions including Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas, and offers guides, case studies, and tools such as baseline assessments, city action plans, and monitoring guidance to help cities measure progress and scale effective practices. The initiative seeks to reduce plastic leakage by creating more circular materials flows, improved data, and diversified market linkages for recycled outputs, ultimately contributing to healthier environments and sustainable urban development.
